Introduction / History

The Label people live on the southwestern coast of New Ireland Province in Papua New Guinea, particularly in and around Nasko village near coastal lowlands. Their way of life has developed over generations in this island setting, with village ties and local relationships forming the basis of identity. They speak the Label language, an Oceanic Austronesian language in the Meso?Melanesian cluster, one of the many small languages found on New Ireland and its surroundings.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Label families live in a rural coastal environment where daily activities are grounded in community cooperation and stewardship of the land and sea. Subsistence gardening provides staple foods, while fishing and gathering from the coast and nearby rivers help meet other needs. Footpaths connect neighboring settlements, and travel by small watercraft along coastal waters is common for visiting relatives or gathering resources.

Their language is the main mode of communication within the community, while Tok Pisin, a broader regional language, is often used when speaking with people from outside the area. Rich cultural knowledge, practical skills, and oral traditions are passed down through intergenerational conversation, sustaining community customs and heritage.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christian faith plays a central role in spiritual life for many Label people, shaping how they interpret life, relationships, and moral guidance within community and family settings. Traditional understandings of unseen forces connected to nature may still influence attitudes for some individuals outside formal worship, but Christian teaching provides the core spiritual framework for many.

Significant portions of Scripture, including the New Testament, are available in the Label language, giving people direct access to large parts of God's Word in the language spoken at home. This access supports worship, teaching, and personal reflection.

What Are Their Needs?

Living in a remote coastal region brings practical challenges. Access to consistent healthcare and formal education opportunities can be limited by basic infrastructure and the distances involved in traveling to larger towns or service centers. Dependable transportation networks are not always available, and families often rely on local resources to meet everyday needs.

Spiritually, continued engagement with Scripture in their own language will help believers connect the gospel more deeply with daily life. Trained local leaders who understand both the language and biblical truth are essential for guiding others in mature faith and discipleship.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Label people will deepen in their understanding of Christ's love and truth, seeing how the gospel shapes their everyday lives.
Pray for ongoing growth in Scriptural engagement in their language, that even more of God's Word will be embraced and reflected upon within homes and worship gatherings.
Pray for humble, faithful local leaders to continue emerging who can teach, disciple, and shepherd others with biblical clarity and compassion.
Pray that the witness of Christlike living among the Label will encourage curiosity and spiritual openness in families and neighboring communities alike.
Pray for provision in practical needs such as improved access to dependable healthcare, educational opportunities, and transportation that support family and community wellbeing.
